Bangladesh is a wonderful country in South Asia, with some spectacular natural beauty and incredibly friendly people. You can get a direct flight to Dhaka from lots of countries around the world, but once you’ve explored the capital, why not check out Sonargaon as well?
Historically, Sonargaon was the capital of Bengal, so it is steeped in fascinating history – and there’s plenty of history to explore here!
Some of the best things to do in Sonargaon include:
Goaldi Mosque
This mosque is from the Medieval era and is located close to Panam Nagar. It’s a beautiful building, with tonnes of history. Visitors can go in most of the time unless a ceremony is taking place.
Panam Nagar
This area is located very close to Sonargaon, founded in the early 19th century and booming due to the cotton industry. It was eventually abandoned by the local Hindu population when the area became part of then-Pakistan, and is now pretty much an abandoned city.
It’s an interesting place to visit to see the architecture. The archaeological area costs a small amount to enter, due to the protection of the city.
Sonargaon Museum
This is the local Folk Arts and Crafts Museum. Sonargaon has a fascinating history and there’s plenty of culture to enjoy at the museum.
Most of what you’ll see in the museum dates back from 17th century Bengal. It’s a great insight into daily life in Bangladesh during the time. You can also learn about muslin, which is the fabric which this area was famous for. It costs a small amount to enter the area.
Once you’ve visited the museum, you can also take a boat out on the lake, and you can also go fishing as well. There are also places to take a picnic on site.
Sonargaon is one of the must-visit places in Bangladesh. You can take a direct flight to Dhaka, and after spending some time in the city, day trips are available to Sonargaon. You can either do this as part of a tour or you can go independently. If you want to learn more about the city, it might be worth going with a tour guide!
